Video transcript:
Stop chasing your past performances. More often than not, when we have a really good game or a really good bat or a really good rep or whatever it might be, we tend to think that we have to follow it up with another performance that is just as good, if not better.
This mindset typically leads to decreased performance, and that’s because we’re creating unnecessary pressure for ourselves and unintentionally abandoning the approach that worked for us in the first place which is a present moment focus. Now here’s three ways that you can break free from this mindset.
First, before every game remind yourself that this time will be different and that you are capable of handling that challenge. Create a statement for yourself and write it down somewhere where you can see it during the game. Something little that reminds you that all the work you put in has prepared you to meet whatever challenge you face next.
Two, turn your attention outwards. Focus on the game that is happening in real time and each little thing that you can do that’s in your control. You can’t be in your head about a past performance and in the current game at the same time.
Three, when you evaluate your performances, chase standards and not outcomes. Ask yourself questions like: How well did I prepare for this game? How hard did I complete? Or, how committed was I to my approach?
Follow through with your standards and let the outcomes happen on their own. Follow for more tips on how to train your mental game and put yourself in the best position for peak performance.
